If you own a home, there will always come a time that you will need to replace your roof. The process may be quite difficult for a do-it-yourself project and also requires some expertise so that the new roof may function to meet the needs of your home. For professional roofing replacement, call Myers Select Homes. Our roofing experts are HAAG Certified.
Here is our roofing replacement procedure:
Work area preparation
The first thing we do in setting up a new roof is securing boards along the bottom of the roof to catch the slipping shingles and people. We also use safety harnesses that may be secured on the roof to prevent falls. Setting up a garbage container for disposing the unwanted roofing material is also part of the preparation.
Taking off the old roof
In removing an asphalt shingle roof, we begin by removing the ridge cap shingles first. We then use a shingle fork underneath the shingles to pry them upward. The procedure starts at the top going downwards until all the shingles are removed.
To remove a metal roof, a pry bar or drill is used to remove the screws. The panels are then removed one by one from the roof.
Replacement of old flashing
An inspection is done to ensure good condition of flashing before the new roof is installed. Areas of attention with flashing include the drip edge, roof’s valleys, chimney and vents. Rusted, old or leaking flashing is repaired or replaced to prevent water seepage.
Even the best of roofs will most likely let in some moisture/water behind it. Underlayment catches that water and prevents the framing below from getting damp and rotting in the process. If there isn’t an ice or water barrier, we will install it first before putting the underlayment. The barrier is put below the drip edge.
Laying the roof
In roof replacement, starter shingles are used at the sides and the bottom. Nails used on the shingles should just be under the tar strip.
In metal roofing, screws are nailed on the ridges instead of the flats to prevent leaking; we use quality screws with rubber washers for maximum protection from leaks.
This is the last step of our roofing process where we clean and collect all debris from old roofing for safe disposal.
